Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has ruled out expanding the Covid-19 wage subsidy program for struggling businesses when Auckland lowers alert levels.

It comes after growing calls for increased financial support for the retail and hospitality sectors.
“The wage subsidy has been very targeted at the parts of the alert levels where it’s very, very difficult to operate,” Ardern told Breakfast.

Hospitality New Zealand told Breakfast that hundreds of businesses in the sector are on the verge of closing without further government support.
