Best States for Teacher Compensation in 2021: How Utah Ranks
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – It’s that time of year again – back to school. Students return to the classroom – in person or virtually – alongside the teachers. But how much do teachers earn in front of the class?
According to a new report from Business.org, teacher pay has declined over the past decade in the United States, but there has been slight growth from 2019 to 2020. Teachers earn 13% more than the average salary across the country, the report says. .
In its report, Business.org compared the average salary for elementary and secondary school teachers to the average salary for all jobs in each state and in Washington, DC.
Here are the top 10 states for teachers in 2021:

Pennsylvania teachers earn 30% more than the average salary, according to the report. In New York City, where teachers earn 29% more than the average salary, teachers have an above average salary of $ 84,659.
Below are the states with the worst salaries for teachers:
- North Dakota
- Washington DC
While Utah is at the bottom of the list, only the other six states and DC pay teachers below the state’s average salary. Business.org reports that the average salary in Utah is $ 51,430, while teachers earn an average of $ 52,819.
Since 2010, the report states that the average salary of teachers in Utah has fallen by about 3%.
