Why Erling Haaland’s transfer is worth 400 million to Real Madrid
Real Madrid are going to be active buyers in the summer 2022 transfer window, making it the first time in three years that they will draw a number of players into a transfer window. Los Blancos signed Reinier Jesus as a prospect in the Winter 2020 window, then Eduardo Camavinga and David Alaba last summer, but 2022 will be the first time they have signed a superstar striker here and now since Eden Hazard in 2019.
Kylian Mbappe will be that superstar. Who else joins is fully up to what the market dictates. Center-back Antonio Rudiger is the safest bet after Mbappe given he is another free agent. Real Madrid are the favorites.
Erling Haaland is not a free agent, but he is another superstar striker who could be signed for an affordable € 75million under his release clause. But where Haaland would really cost Real Madrid is bonuses and salaries.
Borussia Dortmund forward could cost Los Blancos € 400m / pounds in a five-year contract by adding up his release clause, full salary and bonuses for himself, his father and the infamous Mino Raiola .
Erling Haaland is an opportunity Real Madrid cannot pass up
Haaland has brilliantly managed to put himself in this position where he can choose his future AND earn a huge salary.
Real Madrid don’t have bottomless pockets and it would be difficult to fit in Mbappe and Haaland’s salaries and bonuses. But for Los Blancos, pretty much any price is worth it for Haaland.
Recruiting the best players in the world is an obsession for Florentino Perez. And he knows that in this economy, PSG, Manchester City and Chelsea reign supreme in football. They can spend what Real can’t. So for them to have a chance against players like Haaland or Mbappe is rare. As we saw last summer, PSG can reject an offer of 200 million euros. They play in a different league.
If Haaland were in the transfer market and not available via a release clause, he would be banned at Real Madrid. They couldn’t afford it. Because in addition to the salary, they would have to pay something like 200 million euros in transfer fees to compete with the offers of City and PSG.
So for Real, 400 million euros over five years is doable. And it’s even easier to swallow that financial blow if it comes with the headlines and income generated from building the most exciting squad. Beautiful football and the market value to have Mbappe, Haaland and Vinicius Junior on the same team would be incredible. And we don’t even mention Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric completing their work.
Erling Haaland is an investment, not a bet
Real Madrid are happy to pay the players their fair value. We have seen it with contracts like the ones they gave in the past, even those which are now heavy like Eden Hazard’s. Haaland is a 21-year-old ascendant who has scored 53 goals in 53 games. He is unique in his life as a forward athlete, and his accomplishments at this point in his career bear this out.
There is little risk in signing Haaland compared to the risks Real took with players like Hazard or even prospects like Vinicius. Vini’s risk largely paid off, Hazard’s less. Gambling with young people is therefore less risky. Bet on a striker who has proven himself in the Champions League and break Bundesliga records in Dortmund? It is not so much a bet as an investment.

And Real loves to invest in superstars who are yet to reach their true peak. This club’s best successes have been built around such moves, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale as record transfers. And Haaland wouldn’t even be a record transfer, just a big annual investment in salary to compensate for his special talents.
