Why the vampire dies in No Time’s John is the best animal companion
Let’s be honest. Most of the major animated films and TV shows of recent years have one key element in attracting people, and that is pets. Disney movies of all kinds love to include an adorable four-legged friend to follow along with his protagonists, and shows like The owl house and Kipo and the Age of Wonders include courageous animal pals. Can we really blame them for taking advantage of this trend? Nothing better to capture the attention and hearts (and wallets) of the public than a pet. They are lovable, lively creatures bursting with personality that often provide a bit more media fun. Of Pokemonfrom Pikachu to Cowboy Bebop‘s Ein, the anime also has no shortage of animal companions to fall in love with. And right now, an adorable new companion is about to be unveiled. A bouncy companion and an adorably round shape perfect for cuddling.
He is cute. It is useful. He understands human language but cannot use it himself. Give up for The vampire dies in no timeit’s Jean! The vampire dies in no time is a new anime premiering on October 4 of this year that follows the unlikely duo of vampire hunter Ronaldo and wimpy vampire Draluc. The show focuses on the two as they navigate life and work together, as well as Draluc’s penchant for drying out with every little scare or injury. After Draluc’s castle is destroyed, he moves in with Ronaldo, but we soon find out that it’s not just Draluc moving in. He also brought John, a familiar immortal armadillo.
In the moments after someone meets John, they are absolutely in love with him. When Ronaldo first meets him after Draluc moves in, Ronaldo says John can stay but Draluc has to go. Tou Handa allows John to be part of his search for Ronaldo’s house. When John is presumed missing, everyone rushes to offer to help find him. He’s a character who never fails to bring the cast together because he’s so incredibly adorable and sweet.
However, this can be said for most animated animal companions. So what makes John special? First, its species is quite unique. Usually, vampires are associated with animals such as bats and sometimes rats or cats; armadillos have never been on the list of animals linked to vampirism. However, there is a very tiny connection between vampires and armadillos. In the 1931s Dracula, armadillos are briefly sighted in the count’s castle, which could have been Jean’s inspiration. More generally, however, armadillos share their nocturnal nature with vampires, and as the only animal other than humans known to be a carrier of leprosy, they can be used as a nod to the historical connection between the folklore of the vampires and disease. So, not only is John adorable and a type of animal not often used as a companion, but he’s also an interesting symbol of vampirism that is not commonly seen.
Second, unlike some pets, he can’t talk (at least, to anyone other than Draluc.) Normally, this would place him in a group with non-verbal companions who are usually only used for letting go. ‘cute or comical effect, similar to companions like Pua and Hei Hei in Moana. John manages to avoid this categorization by being rather essential to the plot. There are lots of funny moments in The vampire dies in no time that rely on John and his reactions to things, like Draluc’s death or his use by Handa to dig up dirt on Ronaldo. In fact, at times like these, John almost tries to act as the voice of reason. He watches the actions of Ronaldo, Draluc and other characters worry, making his noises and gestures frantic as if begging everyone to relax. However, he’s equally hilarious when he doesn’t seem bothered by the antics of the cast, like Ronaldo dressing him in an attempt to cheat his editor or having garlic rubbed on his stomach to kill Draluc.
In addition to being a part of the comedy of the series, John is also important to see the development and personalities of certain characters. The best example is that of Ronaldo. When Handa and Draluc try to quietly search the apartment for secrets Ronaldo is hiding, Ronaldo continues to watch them, wanting to join in on what they are doing. He never seems upset that he is told to go away; he just growls and goes back to his desk. It’s only when John arrives at the office to occupy Ronaldo that we understand Ronaldo’s true feelings: he feels lonely and rejected. In this case, John is presented as a person people trust with their problems and is seen as a true friend. It is the mark of a good animal companion. Ultimately, humans crave companionship. We need a person or animal to talk to and connect with to keep us in a good mood. That’s why audiences love these cute and cuddly animal characters; they are a way to fill that need for companionship and to help combat feelings of loneliness and isolation.
John has been the best animated pet for a long time. He absolutely wears The vampire dies in no time, not only by being adorable and humorous, but also by being an important character in the series. John is one of the main reasons viewers tune into the series every week, and one of the reasons people choose to start the anime. This is because he is not only a special species, but he also has the unique position of being not only a silly little creature who makes people smile, but also a fairly important character who serves as a connection point. and confidant for the casting. He also gives audiences a better understanding of the personalities and thoughts of other characters and often acts as the voice of reason in the midst of the high-energy cast. It covers all of the roles a pet usually plays – point of connection for the audience, comedic relief, market value – with the added bonus of being really necessary for the show. In the end, this is what makes him the best animal companion. He’s a lovable, armored little pal who is funny, has the personality of a concerned parent, and yet is treated like a baby by Ronaldo and Draluc. It’s important enough that if it were removed from the series, it wouldn’t be the same in sentiment and plot. So let John come into your heart; everyone needs this awesome little armadillo in their life.
